NASH87 is proudly hosted by McMaster University's official student-led paper, The Silhouette, serving over 30,000 students in Hamilton, ON. The conference is presented in conjunction with the Canadian University Press, the oldest student-led cooperative in North America.
NASH is an annual conference that allows student journalists from across Canada to come together. They learn about the media industry, participate in workshops, listen to guest speakers, and network with industry professionals.
Each conference is run by a “host school” in partnership with the Canadian University Press (CUP) a national, non-profit co-operative, owned and operated by student newspapers from coast to coast. The oldest student news service in the world and North America’s only student press cooperative, CUP is how student newspapers exchange stories and ideas.
The Silhouette has chosen to plan this year’s conference around the theme PERSEVERE.
In the face of unprecedented challenges, student-journalists have shown remarkable resilience. Our chosen theme for NASH, reflects the journey we've taken through some of the most tumultuous times in recent history.
From the COVID-19 pandemic that upended traditional newsrooms to Ontario's Student Choice Initiative, which threatened the very existence of campus media, we've navigated obstacles that have fundamentally reshaped our industry. Bill C-18 has added another layer of complexity in our newsrooms, forcing us to rethink our relationship with social media and how we share our stories. And now, Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming journalism, bringing both opportunities and uncertainties.
Despite these challenges, student-journalists have continued to tell important stories, hold power to account, and provide a voice for the communities we serve. The decline in print media has only pushed us to innovate, finding new ways to reach our audience and remain relevant in a digital-first world.
"Persevere" is more than just a theme—it's a testament to our commitment to journalism and our determination to thrive, no matter what obstacles lie ahead.
That’s where NASH87 comes in.
